Abstract

Go to China with an open mind. The Great Wall of China not only exists in physical form, but also in minds. It is a misperception that China needs you more than you need China. Therefore, do not assume your way is the only way of doing business and that China has to adapt to your way of thinking and conducting business there. This is especially the case with successful companies, for instance, reflect on the case of Google. Overconfidence, built upon the successes in your home market or other parts of the world, sometimes hinders your ability to grasp reality. Long term, if you think that you can be revolutionary with China, whether it be in policy making, developing a new industrial model or modifying consumer behavior, then you are likely to be disappointed. Hence, Google, inevitably, bumped into the walls by confronting the Chinese government directly.
