Abstract

Much has been said about China as an emerging economy. The reality is that the China story has sold itself, and enthusiastic investors in their zeal to tap into China’s growth have overbought. Many have come to China in search of opportunities; in fact, there has been too much money for too few opportunities. While some have overcome their fear of the unknown and met with initial successes, others have run into trouble. Concerns about transparency, corporate governance, and accounting practices are not new, but perhaps they have taken on special meaning when applied to China. Or, could it be that investors simply do not apply the same rigorous evaluation of their ventures in China as they do to their investments elsewhere?
