Abstract

In an economic downturn, or when funding is severely restricted for any other reason, it is to be expected that there will be a negative impact on the attitudes and mindsets of the employees within the organization. People will fear many consequences, ranging from a degradation of service and the consequent rise in customer dissatisfaction to large-scale job losses and personal financial hard-ship. In such difficult organizational times, the internal “rumor mill,” will work to full capacity and each day will likely provide new, and disturbing, stories of upcoming doom and gloom. Successfully reversing the likely collapse in motivation and reenergizing the employee-base is one of the greatest challenges of management, especially when some of the feared outcomes prove true — such as redundancies.
