Abstract

The global trading regime is witnessing today a proliferation of regional trading arrangements (RTAs) in both the developed and developing worlds. Recently, there has also been an intensification of individual country’s economic engagements with its other trading partners. These are primarily manifested in the signing of Preferential Trading Agreements (PTAs), Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPA). The developed, as well as the developing countries, are participating in these RTAs very actively. At present, the number of agreements notified to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is more than 200, a sixfold rise over just two decades. Given the rush to conclude RTAs, it is expected that the number will reach 300 in about 2 years’ time. Today, with the exception of Mongolia, all the WTO Members are participating in one or more RTA negotiations.
