Abstract

Since 1492, the Dominican Republic, on the beautiful Caribbean island of Hispaniola in the West Indies, has been a bridge connecting Europe with North, Central, and South America. It was from Santo Domingo that the New World was discovered. It has now become a crossroads of migrants of different origins and cultures. Dominicans are proud of their history, from their pre-Columbian archaeological inheritance to their Spanish cultural roots. The Dominican Republic is a multiracial country, where the merengue is the national dance and baseball the , fast-growing economy with links to the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean region. The Dominican Republic is a country with a future.
