Abstract

Chile is located in southwest South America. It is a narrow strip some 100–445 kilometers wide and 4200 kilometers long, located between the Pacific Ocean and the peaks of the Andean chain, running from the seventeenth parallel of southern latitude to Cape Horn. It is bordered by Peru to the north, Bolivia and Argentina to the east, the Drake Sea to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, in which it possesses several islands and archipelagos. Chile also claims rights to over 1.2 million square kilometers on the Antarctic continent, where it maintains a number of bases. Excluding claimed Antarctic territory and including Easter Island, San Fernandez, and other islands, Chile has a land area of 756,566 square kilometers (see Figure 5.1)
