Abstract

Panama is an S-shaped isthmus located in the middle of the Western Hemisphere, linking North and South America. It is the narrowest landmass separating the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. At the turn of the twenty-first century, Panama consolidated its territory by receiving the Panama Canal and adjacent military bases from the United States. The country is managing the canal efficiently and has begun its expansion to serve the needs of world trade in this century, developing the emerging clusters of maritime and commercial activity at both entrances to the canal, strengthening its democratic and economic institutions, and extending the benefits of development to all its population.
