Abstract

It was not until relatively recently that the advantages of markets, specialization, and the innovation of power and transportation came together to produce new goods and wealth unprecedented in ten thousand years of human history. We have become accustomed to the fast pace of progress and the amazing efficiencies of production. We forget that if human history were a kilometer long, this modern era of economic bounty merely represents the last few paces.
