Abstract

It is said that if three blindfolded people were each allowed to explore different parts of an elephant, without knowing what it was, then the person feeling the truck might suggest it was some sort of flexible hose, the person feeling a leg might suggest it was a tree and the person at the tail might suggest a brush. While that might be an oversimplification it does serve as a reminder that a single view of a complex subject is unlikely to reveal all its features. Engineers, for example, typically draw three different orthogonal views to portray an object and, if necessary, supplement that with other views to show obscure detail or hidden internal features.
