Structure and Productivity During a Simulated Transition: The Polish Case

Abstract

This paper aims at an analysis of structural changes in the Polish economy. The economic transformation in Poland entailed changes at both the macro and the micro levels. These changes have involved the privatization of the national economy, liberalization of foreign trade and technical progress. In the model used for this analysis the privatization and technical progress take the form of autonomous technical progress affecting all of the installed capital or new capital from investment. An evaluation of the impact of particular factors is often impossible; yet an effort aimed at their separation is necessary. In the model, the privatization of the economy as well as technical progress are treated in a similar way as processes which induce changes in the parameters of the production function. Simulation results are presented and the envisaged progress of the transformation process is assessed using the criterion of convergence of sectors to their optimum paths.
