Abstract

Venture capital and private equity investment are fairly new phenomena in GCC countries. The initiatives are recent and the learning curve is yet to unfold. Small business relies, traditionally, and the GCC states are no exception, on savings, personal loans, and family reserves, contributions by friends and associates, and, venture capital. Venture capital is a provider of small business equity input in the United States. This is usually complemented by commercial bank loans, loans by financial institutions, and loans made by the entrepreneur himself. So venture capital contribution to small business finance is narrow and the road to it is bumpy. Conditions are stringent and the process is exhausting. Critical noises are loud and experience in other emerging economies is far from encouraging.
