Abstract

In March 1999 the members of EXCO were informed of an anonymous donation of Z$10 million, equivalent to the current annual fee income of 120 pupils. This, with contributions in kind from the Peterhouse Appeal (UK), would fund the new science department – which, as we have seen, was finished and equipped to a high standard. It was opened on Speech Day 2001 by John Carter, after whom the building was named and for whom this was his last official function as Chairman of the Board. He had taken over from Bob Williams in 1997, and had enthusiastically driven the project forward. Speech Day in 2000 at Peterhouse Girls’ saw the opening of a new library and computer complex. In the following year the Springvale chapel was imaginatively extended, and the prep school acquired a huge covered sports area.
