Institutions, Organizations and Enterprise: Their Co-Evolution

Abstract

Before addressing the essential issue of corporate governance in the information age we will explain how the co-evolutionary dynamics of the relationship between institutions and enterprise play out. We will construct a model of the process, taking care not to confuse – as is often done – institutions with organizations. We distinguish the two and see institutions as the rules of the system, for example the rule of law,1 and organizations as supporting the institutions, for example the high courts of justice which are created by so-called ‘secondary laws’.
