Abstract

“Hankook Igyora!” (roughly translated as “Win, Korea!”) was the chant of the ecstatic fans in the stadia, city squares, and shopping malls of Seoul, Pusan, and Kwangju as they watched the South Korean football team defy all expectations to reach the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup. To judge from such wild enthusiasm, you might have guessed that soccer was the South Korean national game. But you would have been wrong. And in case you’re guessing, no, it isn’t tae kwon do or ssireum either. There’s absolutely no doubt about it, the national sport of South Korea is gaming.
