Abstract

With the beginning of the Asian crisis, Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) into Asian countries (here, ‘Asian countries’ includes NIEs, ASEAN countries, and China) fell drastically. According to data provided by the Japanese Ministry of Finance (MOF), after a stable net flow of around more than 10 billion dollars from 1995 to 1997, Japanese FDI into Asian countries decreased 44 per cent in FY 1998 (Foreign Direct Investment Statistics at www.mof.go.jp ). Among Asian countries, net FDI flow into ASEAN countries fell most drastically, especially net FDI flow into Indonesia and the Philippines which fell by 59 per cent and 49 per cent respectively in 1998 (Nihon Keizai Shinbun 6 April 1999).
