The Implementation of Compliance Programmes in Multinational Organizations

Abstract

Despite the term compliance being used in the English language since the mid-seventeenth century, it is only recently that it has acquired its current meaning of observing certain rules arising from legal provisions, or from the provisions of a self-imposed code of conduct. This new connotation has been developed primarily in the USA, as evidenced by the embarrassment which its translation into other languages than English causes. Indeed, in many languages, the English word ‘compliance’ is used, for lack of a better word, to express a concept not yet fully assimilated and understood.
