Abstract

Ask who the largest telecommunications company is in the world and thoughts usually turn to large American companies such as AT…T and Verizon or European companies going global such as Vodafone or Telefonica. But in terms of the number of customers (522 million at the end 2009), size of the network (over 400,000 base stations on the same date) and market capitalization ($175 billion on 31st March 2009),1 the answer by some considerable distance is a company present in only two markets, China and Pakistan: China Mobile. How China Mobile reached this point, and how it has done so — in part, through the provision of innovative services aimed at addressing real sustainability challenges — is an intriguing story about the interplay between government and business.
