Abstract

Big business has historically been the bête noire of green and community pressure groups. That isn’ t surprising — there’s a long roll-call of well-documented cases of environmental damage and social injustice linked to industry, from the chemical leak at Bhopal in India in the early 1980s, through the huge oil spill in the Prince William Sound in Alaska at the end of that decade, to poor working conditions in the supply chains of some of the world’ s biggest retailers. And with NGOs successfully highlighting examples of corporate malpractice, the image of big business abusing both people and the planet in the name of profit has gained credence over recent decades.
