The Challenge of Leadership for the Third Sector

Abstract

Leadership in the third sector has some distinctive characteristics which marks it out from the other sectors. In the private sector the implicit (if not explicit) existence of a bottom line is a factor of life for leaders. For the public sector most public managers are ever aware of the political dimension with an ultimate accountability to elected politicians who in turn are held accountable by electorates. There are also other factors which differentiate the nature of leadership in the third sector which will be explored at the outset of this chapter.
