Abstract

The rate at which the BRICS countries have grown in the last couple of decades has been impressive. As the chapters of this book have shown, a number of factors have contributed to this, including, for example, foreign direct investment (FDI), improved absorptive capacity and growth of domestic high-tech industries as well as the support of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). To this end each of the BRICS has used different strategies and policy mixes. However, this growth and the countries’ policy focus have not necessarily been altogether inclusive. This concluding chapter discusses some of the emerging concepts of science and technology (S&T) for development, related to both the high-tech and high-growth sectors, as well as those that can be deemed more inclusive, targeting the ‘bottom’ of the pyramid.
