Abstract

The European Union employment strategy, as it was defined by the Lisbon Agenda, has brought the issue of ‘better jobs’ and ‘workers’ well-being’ to the centre of discussion in Greece (as in most of the member states). However, such a debate was not in conflict with the Organization’s fundamental commitment to the advancement of regional capitalist economies. Thus the recent vague debate on ‘better jobs and working conditions’ was combined, in a rather contradictory way, with the grim reality of labour deregulation. The indistinguishable word ‘flexicurity’ dominated the Greek government’s rhetoric, in line with the Commission’s objective to: ‘promote flexibility combined with employment security and reduce labour market segmentation, having due regard to the role of the social partners’ (EC, 2005, p. 2).
