Women-Friendly Workplaces

Abstract

Creating and maintaining women-friendly workplaces can be a particular challenge for employers, at local, national and international levels. As a means of demonstrating some of these challenges, this chapter will focus on Australian workplaces, within a broader global social policy context. With over 50 per cent of carers being women, emphasis will be placed on the needs of employers, employed carers of people with a life-threatening/terminal illness, carers ceasing work (temporary or permanent) and carers returning to work, including bereaved carers. The concept of a ‘compassionate workplace’ is explored in response to the accompanying grief and loss associated with illness, loss and carer responsibilities having an impact on workplace productivity, profits and retention of valued staff.
