Households, Work, Time Use and Energy Consumption

Abstract

This chapter explores the connection between two emergent phenomena within time use literature — the relationship between household time use activities and forms of household consumption, particularly energy consumption occurring within the dwelling and in travel. The premise of this chapter is that time spent in employment outside the household influences household lifestyle patterns, represented by time spent by household members in domestic work and leisure activities. This in turn influences the distribution of consumption activities within a household, and consequently the level and type of energy consumption.
