Women Managers in Latvia: A Universal Footprint for the Future?

Abstract

In 2006, close on 41 per cent of managers in Latvia were female (Eurostat, 2006). This was the highest proportion of women managers anywhere in the European Union (EU), exceeding the proportion of female managers in the UK and by some 6 per cent, and exceeding the proportion of female managers in Sweden, Ireland and Germany by 9, 11 and 14 per cent respectively. The divergence between the proportion of male and female managers in Latvia, and elsewhere in the EU, poses the question as to the factors that have created this situation and whether they are unique. At the same time, this critical mass of female managers in Latvia provides a window of opportunity for the authors of this chapter to interview managers in Latvia and study perceptions of the impact of female managers on organisations.
