Is a Safer World “Worth It”?

Abstract

We have offered here an expanded approach to planning for safe progress, based on the notion of preserving natural levels of risk. Although the pathways to safe progress have yet to be determined, any approach to preplanning for risk will require some radical changes to the way we live, and indeed our whole system of living. Only in this way can we avoid risk dilemmas of the “doomed if we do, doomed if we don’t” variety. Identifying and establishing wider systems of risk planning and control will undoubtedly require great effort. So while even though the means may eventually come into clearer focus, the bigger question becomes one of valuation. Is pursuing the effort to achieve a safer world “worth it”?
