Where Are We Now?

Abstract

The fuzzy nature of high-stakes risk suggests that it may be difficult to tell just how risky the world has become, at least before it is too late. Recognizing that, up to this point in our history at least, the dominant response has been the sort of fatalism based on acquiescence, we may not be in a very good place with respect to risk. Fanciful application of statistical techniques to a domain in which they have no relevance enforces this somewhat negative view. A reasonable assessment of the facts suggests that we may be living in a world where “un-natural” acts have tipped the scale toward disaster. In fact, there may be manifestations of this increased danger occurring today.
