Opportunism

Abstract

The 2008 credit crunch and cash write-offs had early warning signals, from the HSBC 2006 subprime problems in the USA to the Shanghai stock market drop in early 2007. Global linkages create perspectives not previously anticipated by North American and European business. The capitalist difficulties in the West allow the Chinese to nod knowingly that the ‘foreign moon is not more round’. Rational thinking in the East and West is asymmetrical, yet because something is foreign we all tend to assume that it is better or worse than our homespun values. The Chinese see their values as more attuned to fl uctuations in economic forces than Western destructive capitalism.
