Health and Safety Committees in France: An Empirical Analysis

Abstract

The number of occupational illnesses recognised each year in France has grown exponentially over the past 20 years, rising from under 5000 in the late 1980s to more than 40,000 in 2006, including 2000 new cases of occupational cancers and close to 30,000 cases of musculo-skeletal disorders. But these figures do not tell the full scale of the public health problem, because occupational diseases are grossly under-reported, as all those concerned with health and safety at work know (Dares, 2007). Health and safety at work is now a central issue of health policies.
