Abstract

Underlying this volume is a Japan-Russia joint research project launched by the Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University, and the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies, State University — Higher School of Economics (SU-HSE). The core of this research was a large-scale enterprise questionnaire survey conducted all over the Russian Federation in 2005, the results of which were used as the common basis for the empirical analyses performed in this book. The survey was designed to gain an understanding of the evolutionary process of firms’ organization and the business environment in transforming Russia and to shed light on corporate governance in the former socialist enterprises. In this appendix, we first briefly describe how the survey was designed and implemented, and then explain the basic characteristics of the surveyed firms.1
