The Construction of Businesswomen in the Media: Between Evil and Frailty

Abstract

Is there something special about the connection between business and the media? One such thing is the central place business acquired in the mass media, at least in Sweden, in recent decades. Due to pension reforms, most Swedish citizens became interested in the financial markets. Together with the traditional attention paid to labor relations in Sweden, this has called for special attention to business in the media: this on the local and concrete level. In the global economy, the processes of imitation run in all directions, but especially from the centre to the periphery. This chapter illustrates this process on the example of the ways the media described the cases of a Swedish woman banker and a US woman banker located in London and working for a German bank. The case is analyzed along the lines suggested by the so-called ‘circuit model of culture’, presented in the next section. The chapter ends with speculation concerning future ways of describing businesswomen in the media.
