Abstract

The yellow ambience of the Broadway theater lights dimmed slowly until we sat in perfect darkness. Moments later, a single bulb from a powerful stage light illuminated an actor who stood in the center stage looking out toward the audience. Dressed in a sober, gray pinstriped suit with a conservative red tie, a smart white handkerchief placed neatly into his breast pocket, and which alluded to an earlier age, he addressed the invisible full house. With a few pithy, energetic sentences, the actor’s character points out that it is only the light reflecting off him that makes him visible to the audience. At the time it seems an unnecessary, self-evident truth.
