Technological Capacity-Building Initiatives in the Ghanaian Apparel Industry

Abstract

The textiles and apparel industries in Ghana have been central to the development of the country’s economy given the fact that not only do they play a very important role in meeting the basic needs of the people, but they have also created large numbers of job opportunities. Skills in local textile production have been passed on from one generation to the next and, despite the advent of modern more efficient and effective technologies, archaic local technologies for spinning and weaving are still extant. Whilst cotton production is confined to northern Ghana, textile and apparel production is common in the Ashanti, Greater Accra and Volta regions of southern Ghana. The production of textiles comprises principally of a few large companies and many small and medium-sized enterprises. The apparel industry is mainly made up of small and medium-sized enterprises located in different parts of the country.
