Transforming Heating and Utilities

Abstract

The transformation of heating and utilities is different from the transformation of transportation. While the components of transportation systems, such as cars, trucks and fuels, are the same all over the world, the heating and utility systems differ between countries. In the United States, natural gas is used to a large extent for the production of electricity, making this country the largest user of natural gas in the world. In this country coal and nuclear energy are also used for the same purpose. In another large country, France, the natural endowments of gas, coal and oil are not very large, and this country has grown highly dependent on nuclear energy. In Sweden, with its large rivers in the north, hydroelectric power is complemented by nuclear energy to supply its small population of 9 million people with power.
