Change Happens in Steps

Abstract

Contrary to what many people intuitively tend to believe, change usually happens in steps, which may be more or less distinct. Yet, we sometimes perceive change to be radical and sometimes surprising. It may seem as if a new technology, or product, has been developed, launched and spread in almost no time at all. This, however, is never the case. Technologies always develop in steps, and to experts in an area, a particular development is seldom surprising. A new technology is generally developed and spread at a low level before it becomes widely available to everybody in the open market.
