Abstract

John the Fearless really did exist. He was duke of Burgundy (1371–1419), and the son of Philip the Bold (a courage-filled family indeed). He earned his sobriquet on the battlefields of the One Hundred Year War, during which he conquered Paris in 1418. But rather than for his historical feats, John the Fearless is best known as the main character in a favorite tale by the Brothers Grimm. The story is of a young man who sets out in search of fear because he does not know it. But until he marries the princess, becomes the master of the palace, and looks set to live happily ever after, he does not feel the threat of losing what he has … and that is
