Abstract

For Cartier the battlefield is not only in the jewelers’ showcases uptown, but overseas in hundreds of Chinese homes, too. Piracy is now a hot item in the land that gave us pasta, paper, and gunpowder. Churning out imitation watches at the startling rate of 100 to 150 a day, a family can eke out a living of 100 dollars a week. In the shop the copies go for $135, and are now available over the Internet, when the real thing might go as high as 3,000 euros. In a global world, competition (legal or otherwise) is global, too.1
