Abstract

The Italian production system is dominated by small and microenterprises. In general, these companies have established close relationships with their respective local areas. In many cases the small and micro-enterprises are part of industrial districts or local production systems. In 2003 the companies operating in industrial districts covered almost 50 per cent of the overall employment in the manufacturing sector (Coletto 2006).
