Abstract

Works of art are the traces that artists leave behind them as they pursue their obsessions. Artists therefore, do not view their works in the way that others do. They are not the end of the activity; art is in the action, the endless process of practice and creation. Artists are artisans first. They are practical craftspeople and the arts have at their heart a core of knowledge that is not merely cognitive but physically embedded in the whole person. This type of knowledge can only be acquired by practice and is best transmitted by experience – you cannot learn how to be a classical guitarist, or a painter only by reading a book. Becoming an artist is a physical experience.
