International Trade Networks

Abstract

Four main types of networks are created from the data sets used in the study: trade, alliance, diplomatic visits, and IGO networks. I will discuss each type in the following four chapters; this chapter will be devoted to international trade networks that in recent times have become very dense. To discuss them, it is necessary to examine smaller subsets because in their entirety—and even by region—they are too densely interconnected; network diagrams are not informative when all the countries are shown with all their connections in one picture. However, the statistical model, described in a later chapter, uses all the network-related data available in the data sets for all the UNGA countries each year. Even when using subsets, it is difficult to draw many conclusions about the relationships unless there are obvious outliers or patterns; knowledge of the subject can help to find anticipated patterns, but it is difficult to find unanticipated patterns that are hidden. The statistical model is an improved approach to researching the relationships, but this examination and discussion of the network diagrams helps to familiarize the reader with the data; some relationships may be uncovered and it may help to anticipate or corroborate results of the statistical model.
