Abstract

To impose the process of inquiry described in this book on people who do not actively search for goodness may seem quaint, naive, or worse. The drug dealers in Colombia, the Mafia, the gangs in Los Angeles, and even the students in high schools across the country who think it’s okay to cheat almost certainly will not embrace the ethical ideal—not today and maybe not ever. They do not see how it applies to their real lives. Without a material reason to do something they won’t do it; and, conversely, when given a material reason they are almost sure to do it. The U.S. government might talk with the rational people in Somalia, and that may do some good, but the pirates from that country could not care less about right and wrong. Yet striving toward an ethical framework is still crucial to the success of society.
