Abstract

America, unlike the three continents bordering the Mediterranean Sea (Europe, Africa, and Asia) had an isolated history until its discovery by Europeans. Its people appear to have had little contact with those of other continents and even among each other. This unlike conditions in the areas around the Mediterranean where major transcontinental empires were established over several millennia before Christ. In fact, there is evidence not just of isolated intercontinental migration but also large-scale movements of whole peoples.
