Contrasts in Transition to Market-Oriented Economies: India and Korea

Abstract

As of the late 1940s, despite the disparity in their population sizes, there were striking resemblances between the situations of India and Korea. Both countries were newly free from colonial rule. Indian independence from the British had come in 1947, with major disruption associated with the partition of India and Pakistan. Korean independence from the Japanese had come in 1945, and partition with its attendant dislocations followed soon afterward.
