Wage Policy in a High-Inflation Economy: The Israeli Experience

Abstract

In this paper we analyse the evolution of wage policy in Israel during a period of high and accelerating inflation. Inflation in Israel increased from an annual rate of less than 10 per cent, during the 1960s, to a peak of over 400 per cent in 1984. We focus on the period 1979 to 1985, the period of three-digit inflation. A description of wage policy in earlier years will introduce the institutional set-up of wage determination.
