Abstract

Recently, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), sponsored an International Symposium on the direct costs of coal pollution abatement.1 This paper presents a summary and comparisons of findings with regard to the costs of environmental control technologies, and on the effect of pollution control on coal’s competitiveness with other energy sources, in four principal areas: (i) coal production and distribution; (ii) the use of coal for electric power generation; (iii) conversions from oil and gas to coal; and (iv) advanced coal-utilisation processes.
