Abstract

Urbanisation in the countries of the Third World during the second half of this century has occurred at a fast pace. Cities in most African countries have annual population growth rates of about 6–7 per cent, and Asian and Latin American cities are growing at annual rates of 4–6 per cent. Bogota is among the twelve fastest growing cities in the world. While there is no consensus on the extent to which internal migration has contributed to urban growth, most researchers conclude that it accounts for between 40 and 65 per cent of the increase in urban populations in recent decades.1 Whether the urban economy is able to provide employment to this growing population or not has been a major topic of researchers and policy-makers concerned with alleviating poverty in low income countries.
