Abstract

The allocation of freight traffic movements among the modes, and the changes in it, involves the respective roles of the different agencies in terms of types of traffic, distance of hauls, technical interactions or connections (i.e. intermodal traffic), the volume of traffic for each, and the revenues obtained. This paper is concerned with analysing the development of the various modes in the United States and their future trends. Geographical, economic and political contrasts between different countries mean that the pattern of freight transport in the United States will not be reflected precisely elsewhere. However, the use of modern transport technology has resulted in comparable patterns of development in the United States and other advanced, industrialised countries.
