Planning and Mode Split of Freight Traffic in the USSR

Abstract

A high level of transport performance is required to assist planned economic growth in advanced socialist countries. The volume of freight traffic of all modes of transport in the USSR amounted to 6.0 billion ton/kilometres, and the volume of passenger traffic reached 1.2 billion passenger/kilometres in 1978. Every freight ton produced in the national economy travels on the trunk routes an average of 1000 kilometres from producer to consumer; citizens travel an average of more than 4000 kilometres annually.
