The Role of Technological Change in United States Economic Growth

Abstract

During the past twenty years, there has been a continuing interest among economists in the relationship between technological change and economic growth. After many decades of relative neglect, there began in the mid-1950s a series of investigations of various aspects of this relationship, the purpose being both to extend the range and power of economic analysis and to help guide public policy. In the present chapter, my purpose is to summarise briefly some of the major findings of this research and to relate these findings to some of the key questions concerning science and technology policy that have been prominent in the United States in the past ten or fifteen years.
