Abstract

Though agricultural production has increased substantially in developing countries, much of the increase has been absorbed by population growth. Further, production per head has risen very slowly and has lagged behind consumption, while imports have increased. A number of recent studies have suggested that these trends will continue and that net imports of foodgrains by developing countries will approximately double between 1973–4 and 1985. This projected increase in imports would pose serious balance of payments problems for many developing countries, including some of the poorest.2
