Abstract

As the international political climate and the technical and economic potentialities of our time improve, special importance attaches to the question of the prospects for long-term East—West cooperation in the industrial, scientific and technical fields. The interconnection of vital economic interests of the countries involved as partners in cooperation, and the complementarity of their national economic structures, constitute the material foundation for international détente and a major factor in growing confidence and good-neighbour relations among states with different social systems. The Final Act of the Helsinki Conference, which was signed by the leaders of thirty-five states from East and West, explicitly points to the existence of a number of important areas in which tangible, positive contributions to the economic and social progress of all the countries concerned could result from a pooling of efforts on an international basis, whether bilateral or multilateral.
